GMC Hummer EV SUV Buyer’s Guide

4 minute read

By Andrew Silver

It doesn’t take an auto industry insider to predict the coming transition from gas engines to electric ones. Consumer behavior shapes the future of all industries. If we’re to learn anything from the near-past and current purchasing trends, it’s that our automotive future will be electric.1

The decision makers at GMC certainly believe that to be the case. Their line-up of future models is headlined by incredible feats science, tech, and engineering. The latest feather in their cap, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, sets out to unify the ruggedness and versatility that people love about SUVs with practical and reliable electric technology that consumers demand.

But eye-grabbing headlines and flashy press conferences don’t mean much if what’s under the hood isn’t exciting too. Let’s take a closer look at the GMC Hummer EV SUV and find out how excited you should be.

Performance Specs

Electric or gas, nobody likes an SUV that can’t deliver when it counts. Fortunately, a quick glance at the GMC Hummer SUV spec sheet can do a lot to ease your mind. Don’t get it twisted; this is a performance vehicle, so any illusions to the contrary are easily squashed.

GM estimates that the Hummer EV SUV will roll off the lot with up to 11,500 lb.-ft of torque and a whopping 830 horsepower. It’s shaping up to be super-fast too, with an estimated acceleration from zero to 60 in approximately 3.5 seconds.2

The story doesn’t end there. This new SUV comes with a special all-wheel steering system and introduces a brand-new Crab Walk feature that grants the SUV the ability to drive diagonally.3 It also includes a glass-panel roof with removable panels and can wade through up to 32-inches of water for those that like to go off road.

Range and Battery Life

Weak engine performance used to hold potential EV owners back from making the switch. However, those arguments died a long time ago. These days, the most popular anti-EV talking points surround the topics of battery life and range. The beliefs that EVs can only take you so far and are only useful in the city persists.

Once again, those concerns don’t match reality. The GMC Hummer EV SUV has a 300+ mile range, with 800V DC fast charging and up to 300kW. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup, a different model in the same line of vehicles, can charge up to nearly 100 miles in just 10 minutes. The charging statistics aren’t yet out for the GMC Hummer EV SUV, but it’s safe to assume that they’ll be on par or better when than that when the numbers do eventually get released to the public.

With 41,400 currently in the U.S. and plans to increase that number to 500,000 by 2030, charging stations aren’t hard to find these days either. As a result, it’s never been easier to make the switch to electric.4

Safety and Entertainment Features

SUV owners take safety seriously, and so does GMC. The Hummer EV SUV comes stock with an improved version of GM’s Super Cruise. Super Cruise is the ultimate in hands-free driver assistance and includes the innovative automated highway lane-change assist feature.5 On top of Super Cruise, the Hummer EV SUV also includes:

The interior features a mammoth 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with an impressive range of connectivity options with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. If GMC’s history of interior options is any indicator, you can expect options for a Bose Stereo system, built-in navigation, wireless charging, as well as a backseat infotainment system. 6

Price and Release Date

GMC announced a staggered rollout strategy for the various editions and their respective price tags. The 2024 Hummer EV SUV will hit highways all over America early on in the spring of 2023. Being called the Edition 1, this trim starts at $105,595 or $110,595 with the optional Extreme Off-Road Package upgrade.7

A few months after the first Edition 1’s roll off the lot will follow the mid-level packages. The 3X trim will start at $99,995, and the 2X trim will start at $89,995. The base Hummer EV SUV, known as the EV2 trim, is slated to release in the spring of 2024 for $79,995.8

Conclusion

The freshly announced GMC Hummer EV SUV has a lot of car lovers falling over themselves — and it’s easy to understand why. The vehicle’s performance would be impressive with or without the EV designation. Add to that a veritable Christmas list of entertainment options, a gigantic battery range, and an impressive selection of trim packages and price points, and the GMC Hummer EV SUV is looking like a winner.
